Fire Outbreak at University of Montana Campus, Quickly Extinguished

A fire broke out at the University of Montana’s Physical Plant on Wednesday at 3:16 p.m. According to the Missoula Fire Department, the fire was located in one of the two boiler heating units, with heavy smoke billowing from the building.

The Missoula Fire Department told NBC Montana that there was a fire in the west boiler, with heavy smoke and heat when they first arrived. With help from the engineers, firefighters got the gas shut off.

“It initially came in as Aber Hall that they were seeing smoke,” said David Wolter, Missoula Fire Department battalion chief. “We got a quick knockdown on it,” he added.

Three engines, two ladder trucks, a command truck, and two fire chiefs responded to the incident. Crews were able to suppress the fire using two hose lines. Special thanks were given to the engineers at the Physical Plant who assisted in shutting off the gas and electrical power to the affected area, ensuring further safety.

The fire remains under investigation, with no injuries reported. Property damage is estimated at $30,000, while property saved is valued at $2,000,000.

Incident details include:

Location: 110 Campus Drive (University of Montana Physical Plant)

Number of Firefighters: 20 initially, with 10 more assisting later

Number of Units Deployed: 10

The University of Montana Police Department issued an emergency alert, instructing those in the area to evacuate and stay away from the building until an all-clear message was given.

“There is an active fire. If you are at this location, EVACUATE. To evacuate, leave the building and place one building between you and the building you left. If you are near this building, STAY AWAY. Once the fire has been extinguished, you will receive an ALL CLEAR message, and you may return.”

The University of Montana is obligated under federal law to issue emergency notices when an ongoing dangerous situation exists on or near the UM campus.
