ARA Recovery 4 All has launched a new project, providing 30 flats as potential permanent homes for vulnerable individuals in Bristol. This initiative is the result of a collaboration between the charity and Bristol City Council, operating under the Housing First project.
The flats will offer targeted support, enabling tenants to establish a stable foundation. Similar programs are already underway in Manchester, Liverpool, and the West Midlands.
“It’s aimed at supporting people with multiple disadvantages for whom other housing provision has not worked.
“The aim is to give them a base and build other support around it,” said Robbie Thornhill, Director of Operations at ARA.
According to Robbie Thornhill, Director of Operations at ARA, “The goal is to support individuals facing multiple disadvantages who have not benefited from other housing provisions.” He added, “We aim to provide a foundation and build additional support around it.”
Andy Cook, ARA’s housing manager, has personal experience with homelessness and benefited from a similar program.
“I benefited from support that was long-term, was understanding of my needs, and eventually, when I felt ready to make those changes, that support worker was there to walk with me on that journey of recovery,” he said.
Similar initiatives elsewhere have led to reductions in hospital admissions, anti-social behavior, and demand for homelessness services. Tenant selection is a collaborative effort between the council and ARA, with the first tenants moving in later this month.
This accommodation is expected to aid some of Bristol’s longest-term rough sleepers while reducing costs for the council by minimizing demand on services.
Notably, Bristol has seen an increase in rough sleeping over the past year.
