The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has taken a significant step towards modernising tax collection in Nigeria by integrating Flutterwave’s payment technology. This move enables seamless digital tax collection, making Flutterwave one of the few fintech companies supporting the government’s efforts to digitise tax payments.
According to Flutterwave, this development allows FIRS to leverage its secure payment infrastructure to collect taxes, levies, and other payments from businesses and individuals across Nigeria. Taxpayers can now make payments through multiple digital channels, enjoying real-time tracking, offline payment capabilities, and a seamless tax payment experience, both domestically and internationally.
Olugbenga Agboola, CEO of Flutterwave, emphasised the company’s commitment to leveraging technology to drive efficiency and economic growth. “At Flutterwave, we are committed to leveraging technology to drive efficiency and economic growth. By making tax payments easier and more transparent, we are helping to digitize government collections and support national development, which is in line with our mission
The integration offers several advantages, including real-time payment tracking, diverse digital and mobile payment options, offline tax payment capabilities, and enhanced transparency for both taxpayers and FIRS. It also provides Nigerians abroad with a seamless way to fulfil their tax obligations.
Olufunmilayo Olaniyi, Senior Vice President, Business Development at Flutterwave, highlighted the company’s dedication to serving Nigerians. “Working with the public sector is pivotal to shaping the future of digital payments in Nigeria. This underscores our commitment to delivering solutions that serve Nigerians better, foster trust, and drive impactful innovation through strategic collaboration.”
FIRS has rolled out various e-governance initiatives, including online tax filing and payment, electronic tax registration, data-driven risk assessment, and taxpayer portals. As part of its modernisation efforts, FIRS is set to pilot an e-invoicing platform in July 2025, designed to enhance tax compliance, provide real-time visibility into business transactions, and streamline invoice management for companies operating in Nigeria.
