Former judge in court for allegedly attacking blind housewife in Zaria

After being accused of assaulting a blind housewife, Mahmoud Shehu, a former judge of the Upper Shari’a Court, was granted bail by a magistrate court in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Senior Magistrate Ibrahim Adamu Salisu presided over the court on Tuesday, granting Shehu bail with the condition that he provide two grade 10 public worker sureties.

Promotion letters, passport-sized pictures, home addresses, and phone numbers are required of the guarantors.

In addition, Shehu must pay ₦100,000 as part of the bail requirements.

The magistrate determined that Shehu would be detained at the correctional facility until the next hearing, scheduled for February 11, 2025, if these conditions were not met.

Shehu was charged again with illegal trespassing, assault, and using force, allegedly breaching Sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

The former judge allegedly broke into the visually challenged housewife’s home on September 6, 2024, secured the main entry, and physically assaulted her, according to prosecutor Adamu Abubakar.

According to reports, two ladies who attempted to step in were attacked throughout the incident. The victim was treated at the PHC Tudun Wada after suffering injuries.

When questioned by the court, Shehu denied the accusations.

Originally filed on September 10, 2024, before the Magistrate Court Tudun Wada, Zaria, the case was postponed multiple times.

The case was sent to Chief Magistrate Court 1, Chediya, following the resignation of Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi for undisclosed reasons.

It is expected that the next hearing would delve deeper into the charges and the plea of the defendant.
