Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo Hashim has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indicating that the party is poised for a resurgence.

Despite internal strife, defections, and previous setbacks, Hashim thinks the PDP is still the only really national party capable of saving Nigeria from its current predicament in 2027.

The former presidential candidate clarified that the PDP was founded as a national platform from the start during a high-level meeting with the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Wednesday at the Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja.

He continued by saying that the PDP has had a significant presence in almost every polling station in the nation since 1998, claiming that the legacy endures and that the PDP is the only viable rival to the APC because of its widespread national support.

According to Hashim, “The PDP’s grassroots base remains intact, even as some elected officials defected under pressure or political blackmail. I dismiss fears about the party’s dwindling influence.”

Because he believes that a party’s true strength lies not in a select group of influential people but rather in its members, who are still loyal to the PDP, he urged party members not to be deterred by those who have left.

Hashim praised the wisdom and composure with which he has held the reins of the PDP, saying it is admirable and has kept the house intact when others sought to destroy it. He also praised Ambassador Umar Damagum, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, for his leadership during turbulent times.

With a clear eye toward the 2027 presidential contest, Hashim urged the party to field a credible and visionary candidate who will place a high priority on social justice, economic recovery, and national defense.

He urged the PDP to give Nigerians hope because he thinks they are searching for a different sort of leadership. The PDP will rise again with courage, discipline, and unity—not merely to win elections, but to rebuild Nigeria.
