A Fulani leader who has spent 32 years living in the Hurti community of Manguna District, Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State, has confirmed that the attackers who killed 46 people during the recent invasion were Fulani speakers.

Journalist Masara Kim Usman posted a video of the revered Fulani elder on Tuesday. Despite being a Fulani man and Muslim, he has long been considered a member of the Hurti community. He was regarded by the community as a man of peace who coexisted peacefully with everyone as a single family.

The elder claims that the Fulani terrorists spoke his dialect when they arrived.

He claimed that by standing in front of the attackers and asking them about their motivations in their native tongue, he tried to protect vulnerable citizens, whom he referred to as his “friends.” They maintained, nonetheless, that nothing would prevent them from carrying out their goal.

He described how the terrorists threatened to kill him if he did not move out of their way, despite his frantic pleads. After pushing him aside, they carried out the massacre, burning homes owned by Christians and killing 46 people.

The elder claimed that even after decades of peaceful cohabitation with the group he had come to regard as family, the fact that the attackers were his own tribesmen and would not listen to him wounded him the most.

Surprisingly, no Fulani or Muslim residents were hurt during the incursion, highlighting what many observers believe to be the theological reason for attacks connected to Fulani terrorists in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

This contrasts with the terrorist attacks in the Northwest and the insurgency in the Northeast, which frequently target Christians and other minority populations.

The elder described the event, saying, “I heard them speaking fluent Fulani language. They were discussing in Fulani.

“So I approached them and spoke to them in the same language. Women were running to my house, begging me to save them. If I had the power, I would have done so.

“I have lived with them for so many years and they have become my family. When the attackers left, I went to the hills and watched everything unfold.

“Then they regrouped and started shooting. There was gunfire all over the town. We all hid in one room while the shooting continued for a long time, killing many people.”
