BREAKING: Inmates reportedly declares Nnamdi Kanu president inside Sokoto Prison

On Thursday, inmates at the Sokoto Custodial Center reportedly declared the imprisoned IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to be “their president,” creating an uncommon spectacle.

The development came after he was recently transferred from Abuja to the jail, just days after Justice James Omotoshof sentenced him to life in prison for several offenses relating to terrorism.

When Kanu arrived, there was a commotion among the inmates, and several of them hurried to the receiving block where he was taken.

Officials with knowledge of the case claim that after the prisoners started chanting his name, they dubbed him “Prison President,” a designation that quickly spread across the property.

Many prisoners seemed eager to engage with him, according to sources within the facility, who described him as someone who “confronts authority without fear.”

Some apparently moved forward to shake his hand, while others stayed back and watched the chaos with interest.

Kanu’s presence has already altered the jail environment, according to a senior correctional officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to discuss publicly.

He clarified that the IPOB leader had lengthy discussions on justice, politics, and government with other prisoners.

The officer claims that Kanu now hosts casual conversations inside his block, which the prisoners voluntarily congregate to hear.

He claimed that many inmates, including those who had previously shown no interest in politics, now remain silent whenever Kanu talks.

The official went on to say that one of the main reasons he attracts attention seems to be the confidence in his voice.

He pointed out that the change in behavior has also affected the overall atmosphere within the prison, with some prisoners viewing him as a symbol of disobedience.

Kanu had been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) for years while he battled numerous allegations pertaining to his involvement in separatist activities, alleged attacks on security personnel, destruction of public property, membership in a group that was prohibited, and the importation of communication equipment.

As ordered by the court, his move to Sokoto signifies the start of his lengthy incarceration.

In a similar event, TGMearlier revealed that the IPOB leader was found guilty on all seven counts of terrorism-related offenses and given a life sentence.

After that, he was taken from the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja and sent to the Sokoto Custodial Center to start his prison sentence.
