Mohammed Mato, a Fulani leader from Miango in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, has urged young people in the state to embrace greater love, understanding, and tolerance, describing these as essential for fostering unity and peace.
Speaking as a key presenter at a one-day workshop organized by the Miango Youth Development Association (MYDA) on Saturday in Jos, Mato emphasized that the conflicts in Bassa and across the state extend beyond the commonly portrayed farmer-herder clashes.
The workshop, themed “Building a Community Based Approach to Peace Through Early Warning and the Social Media,” attracted participants from various ethnic and religious backgrounds, including community leaders.
Addressing the theme, Mato highlighted that ongoing dialogue among youths would help reduce the increasing violence and insecurity affecting the state.
He emphasized that if young people across ethnic and religious divides commit to unity and embrace tolerance, many of the state’s security challenges could be alleviated.
Reflecting on the past peaceful coexistence, Mato expressed surprise at the current prevalence of hatred in Plateau. He noted that the Fulani and indigenous people of Miango once lived harmoniously.
“If the youths can come together, sit down and talk to themselves, I think things will return to normal,” he said.
“In my younger days, we played, ate and attended the same primary school with my Irigwe friends. We slept in their homes and nothing happened. But today, the story is different and I really don’t know what went wrong.
“Today, we kill ourselves and destroy each other’s properties without a second thought; lack of love, tolerance and understanding abound. So, I’m calling on both the Fulani and the Irigwe people, particularly the youths, let’s sit together and talk to ourselves on the need for lasting peace,” he said.
Mato also encouraged young people to leverage modern technology and Western knowledge to foster peaceful coexistence within their communities.
