Gaza: Turkey takes tough decision against Israel

Turkey has declared that all trade with Israel will be suspended, citing the worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza as the reason.

According to the Turkish Trade Ministry, the embargo would not end unless Israel approved an “uninterrupted and sufficient flow” of humanitarian supplies into Gaza.

The ban on trade, according to the Turkish government, would affect all goods.

This latest development coincides with rising hostilities in the area due to Israel’s operation.

Israel and Turkey’s trade was close to $7 billion last year.

Israel’s foreign minister responded to Turkey’s decision by accusing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of behaving in an autocratic manner and ignoring the needs of Turkish companies and residents.

Israel declared that it would look for alternate trading partners, concentrating on domestic manufacturing and imports.

There have been ups and downs in diplomatic relations for years due to the tight tensions between Israel and Turkey.

Turkey cut diplomatic ties with Israel in 2010 following violent altercations that claimed lives between pro-Palestinian Turkish activists and Israeli commandos on a ship trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Despite the fact that diplomatic ties were repaired in 2016, things deteriorated once more in 2018 after the top diplomats from both nations were dismissed due to Israel’s handling of protests along the Gaza–Israel border.

But the deadly Hamas strike on Israel in October of last year preceded the latest escalation of hostilities between Turkey and Israel.
