Getty Trust’s Fire Relief Fund Saves LA’s Arts Community.

The J. Paul Getty Trust has announced that its LA Arts Community Fire Relief Fund has awarded grants totaling $14.3 million to over 1,700 artists and arts workers affected by the devastating wildfires that swept across Los Angeles County.

Within a remarkable six-week period, grants of up to $10,000 were awarded to affected artists and workers, with 85% of applicants identifying as artists and 15% as arts workers. Notably, 78% of the recipients were impacted by the Eaton fire, while 22% were affected by the Palisades fire.

The fund prioritized supporting those who suffered significant losses, with all individuals who lost their homes, regardless of insurance status, and artists who lost uninsured studios or workspaces receiving full funding at their requested amounts.

Established in mid-January, the fund is administered by the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI), with support from prominent funders including the Mellon, Helen Frankenthaler, and Ford foundations, as well as the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Qatar Museums.

According to CCI President and CEO Angie Kim, “Understanding how severely our cultural community has been impacted by the fires, we designed a program that would quickly get funds to those who needed it most. We involved everyone possible to conduct outreach, connecting with arts employers, hiring community artists, coordinating with other relief funders, and attending neighborhood gatherings.

Kim expressed her appreciation for the trust placed in CCI by the Getty Trust and other funders, stating, “We appreciate the trust Getty and the many funders placed in CCI to foster community and build relationships as a foundational step toward recovery.
