Gov Nwifuru increases workers’ salary by N10,000, approves recruitment of 1,700 teachers

The governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, has authorized a N10,000 pay increase for civil servants.

In order to address the staffing shortfall in the public primary and secondary schools, he also approved the recruitment of 1,700 additional teachers.

At the Workers’ Day celebration on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki, the governor made the announcement.

According to him, “Your commitment and sacrifices are unmatched anywhere in the world.

“We are celebrating today because it is important to reciprocate the gesture and this administration has something in store for you as contained in the People’s Charter of Needs,” he said.

He continued by saying that by boosting the state’s economy, his administration would build on the accomplishments of the previous administration.

According to Nwifuru, workers were partners in development who should be honored for their selflessness.

He gave people assurances about timely salary, pension, and gratuity payments, as well as frequent promotions.

He revealed that the gratuity for individuals who retired between January 2024 and the present had been fully paid.

“Presently, we are paying salaries, pensions and gratuities as at when due and we do not owe anyone, while we are waiting for the outcome of the negotiation on minimum wage,” he said.

The governor further pledged to look into all requests from the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ebonyi State chapter, and approving a N10,000 pay raise for every worker.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) chairman, Professor Ogugua Egwu, stated that the theme of the event, “People First,” is an expression of the absolute need to prioritize the people in all spheres of life in a joint speech read by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Ebonyi State chapters.

He made a request to the state governor to increase the number of teachers employed in the state’s public elementary and secondary schools and to improve the benefits packages for employees.

In addition, he asked for the implementation of judicial autonomy, the approval of welfare benefits for court employees, and the recall of a few Ebonyi State University (EBSU) workers who had been suspended due to their participation in union activities.

In addition, he urged the governor to resurrect Ebonyi State College of Education to train middle class workers, harmonize the gratuity management program in the state and council areas, and reabsorb staff from the former Ebonyi State Teaching Hospital (EBSUTH) into the new teaching hospital.
