Gov Sanwo-Olu finally reacts to IgboMustGo call

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has distanced himself and his government from the request made by some Yoruba extremists for Igbo Nigerians to leave the state and other South-West regions of the country (Yoruba land).

According to ZINGTIE, an account on the microblogging site X (previously Twitter) published a tweet promoting the large-scale demonstration with the hashtag “#IgboMustGo,” which is scheduled to take place from August 20 to August 30, 2024.

The X platform handle, well-known for its anti-Igbo remarks and postings, pushed South-East natives living in Lagos State to leave their country.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, responded to the trend by saying the appeal is extremely concerning and fundamentally at odds with the values of harmony and coexistence that constitute Nigeria as a nation.

Speaking on the subject, Lagos State Governor Gboyega Akosile said that Lagos “remains home to every Nigerian citizen regardless of their ethnic nationality” and characterised the call as hazardous, irrational, and reckless language in a statement released by his special adviser for media and publicity.

According to the governor, “the post was not only reckless and divisive but an attempt to sow a seed of discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other tribes, especially those who have made Lagos their permanent place of abode”.

He pleaded with Lagosians not to permit any individual or group of individuals to sow discord throughout the State.

The governor urged the security services to “promptly investigate those behind the handle and bring them to justice”.

Residents were advised to disregard the message and any similar posts by Sanwo-Olu, who also pledged to double efforts to maintain long-term calm in the State.
