Lagos: Gov Sanwo-Olu addresses rift with president

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has refuted reports suggesting any disagreement between him and President Bola Tinubu.

Sanwo-Olu clarified that his relationship with the President remains strong, describing it as that of a son and a father.

Speculation about tension between the two emerged last week following an event in Lagos State, where President Tinubu appeared to overlook Sanwo-Olu during the commissioning of the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar Expressway.

In a widely circulated video from the event, the President was seen greeting several state governors and dignitaries. When he approached Sanwo-Olu, the governor bowed in a respectful gesture, but Tinubu did not return the greeting. Instead, he moved on to shake hands with the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, before taking his seat.

The incident fueled reports of a fallout between the President and the Lagos Governor.

Addressing the situation during a press conference in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu dismissed the rumors.

He said: “There is nothing at all; he is my father, he is my leader, and we’re grateful that he has given us audience today.”

It was later revealed that President Tinubu had privately reassured Sanwo-Olu that any previous displeasure had been resolved.

This took place during a meeting with members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), who had visited the President to mediate on behalf of Sanwo-Olu and others who may have offended him.

GAC Chairman, Alhaji Tajudeen Olusi, acknowledged that the President had expressed dissatisfaction with certain individuals in Lagos, including the Governor, but added that the matter had been settled during the visit.
