The Imo State House of Assembly has called on Governor Hope Uzodinma to instruct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and other relevant agencies to assist residents of Orsu Local Government Area (LGA), who have returned to their communities after living in exile due to insecurity that began in 2020.

The House issued this call while adopting a motion presented by Uche Francis Agabige, the member representing Orsu state constituency.

Explaining the situation, Agabige stated: “The insecurity in Orsu escalated, spreading to neighboring Oru East and surrounding areas. If not for the governor, Orsu may not have existed anymore. The breakdown of law and order resulted in loss of lives and properties, destruction of security formations, and the displacement of the local population.”

Agabige further noted that the Nigeria Police had successfully restored police stations in the area, with personnel now in full control of security operations, signaling a return to normalcy.

He urged his fellow lawmakers to support the motion, particularly the urgent request for humanitarian assistance to the returnees, who have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the crisis.

“We are like people recovering from war, and we require complete rehabilitation of our infrastructure, including health centers, schools, markets, courts, and more,” he said. “Our roads are no longer passable, which allows criminals to operate. Orsu’s people need essential relief materials like food, clothing, medication, and other necessary supplies to rebuild their lives.”

After extensive discussion, the House resolved to urge the governor to direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NDDC, and other relevant agencies to provide relief materials to Orsu residents. Additionally, the House called for the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure in the area.

The clerk, Chinelo Emeghara, was tasked with communicating the resolution to the governor.
