The Government of Jigawa State has authorized the payment of N1,547,614,974.00 as bursary allowances to 22,388 students enrolled in various tertiary institutions.
Hon. Sagir Musa Ahmad, the State Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports, and Culture, shared this update while briefing reporters about the results of the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday.
This bursary scheme is part of the strategic plan by His Excellency to promote access to quality education, ease financial pressures on parents, and empower young people from Jigawa to achieve academic and professional success.
He stated that the approved funds will cover registration fees for 22,388 students attending 83 tertiary institutions nationwide.
According to him, “In line with the unwavering commitment of His Excellency, Malam Umar A. Namadi, to educational advancement and human capital development in Jigawa State, the Council has approved the disbursement of bursary allowances to eligible Jigawa State indigenes studying in various tertiary institutions to the sum of One Billion, Five Hundred and Forty-Seven Million, Six Hundred and Fourteen Thousand, Nine Hundred and Seventy-Four Naira (N1,547,614,974.00) only.”
“This is intended to benefit a total of 22,388 students currently enrolled in 83 tertiary institutions within and outside Jigawa State.”
Hon. Sagir added that the approved bursary covers 13,622 male and 8,766 female students, demonstrating the administration’s inclusive commitment to supporting educational goals across genders for the 2024/2025 Academic Session.
Launched by Governor Umar Namadi, the bursary program aims to reduce the financial strain on parents caused by the recent increases in registration fees at tertiary institutions.
The rise in fees had sparked concerns that many students might be forced to discontinue their education due to affordability challenges.
