The Sokoto State Government has announced that Thursday, June 26, will be observed as a public holiday in recognition of the first day of Muharram, which marks the commencement of the Islamic calendar year 1447 AH.

This declaration, conveyed through a statement from the Governor’s Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, is aimed at giving Muslims in the state the opportunity to commemorate the Hijrah New Year.

In a message of goodwill, Governor Ahmed Aliyu urged the Muslim community to treat the occasion as a moment for thoughtful introspection, spiritual renewal, and deepening their relationship with God.

“The start of a new Islamic year is a time for honest self-evaluation. We must look back at our actions, correct our shortcomings, and build on our strengths,” the governor stated.

He emphasized the value of internalizing the ethical and spiritual lessons that the Islamic calendar offers. The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s ongoing commitment to supporting Islamic causes and religious initiatives across the state.

Aliyu concluded his message by wishing Muslims in Sokoto and across the globe a harmonious and spiritually fulfilling New Year.
