Govt not sure of crime to charge Emefiele with – Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, claimed on Sunday that former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele left the Bola Tinubu administration in a state of economic disarray and that he was not even sure what accusations to make against him.

Speaking during the Thanksgiving service for Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, Akpabio declared that Emefiele’s economic legacy was “terrible.”

“We did not even know what to charge him with – whether for putting foam on top of the bill, illegal firearm possession, printing notes without income. I don’t know what we are going to charge him with,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President claimed that previous policies were to blame for the current hunger and economic problems.

“But what we can say is that yes there is hunger today because of the policies and actions that they took, and we recognize that, and I think every political party should recognize that there is hunger, and we are battling to ensure that Nigerians sleep with their eyes closed,” he stated.

While promising to work toward raising living standards and security for Nigerians, Akpabio urged patience, pointing out that years of decay could not be resolved in a matter of months. Indeed, insecurity exists; we are fighting to guarantee that Nigerians have access to three square meals a day. But rest assured that we ran nationwide campaigns to win this position and will not let you down. We only need your patience to get to the bottom of the matter.

“That rots that have happened in Nigeria for so many years for almost 60 years—cannot be solved in six months,” he emphasized.

After Tinubu dismissed Emefiele from his role as CBN governor in June 2023, the Federal Government accused him of financial offences.

On January 18, the Federal Government amended the criminal accusations against the former governor of CBN. Twenty counts were added to the original six counts.

In the amendment, Emefiele was charged with criminal breach of trust, procurement fraud, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

The Senate President insisted, nevertheless, that the administration is making a lot of effort to improve the nation and economy.
