Govt suspends four education secretaries for aiding truant teachers

The Jigawa State Government has taken disciplinary action by suspending four Education Secretaries across different local government areas for protecting teachers who had been absent from work for several months.

This was revealed by the Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Haruna Musa, during an interview at his office.

The suspended officials are from the Kirikasamma, Auyo, Miga, and Maigatari local government areas.

Prof. Haruna stated that the suspensions were a result of their involvement in concealing the absence of teachers who had not shown up at their posts for over half a year.

The state education board recently stopped the payment of salaries to 239 teachers due to prolonged absence from their duties.

According to him, “apart from the 239 class room teachers we stopped their salaries, we also identified five more that are not going to school but their names were not included by the affected education secretaries.

“I visited Miga for inspection and in the two schools I visited, I discovered that five more teachers were not going to school for months without any excuses and their names are not included in the list of defaulting teachers ”

“This shows that even those who are responsible for ensuring proper monitoring are not doing their jobs, causing an education crisis in the state ”

According to him, moving forward, the Board intends to increase oversight across all 27 local government areas. Monitoring will focus on schools, quality assurance units, head teachers, staff officers, and education secretaries to ensure proper accountability.

He issued a stern warning that other education secretaries found engaging in similar misconduct will also face suspension.

Prof. Haruna concluded by calling on members of the public to report any inappropriate behavior by teachers so that necessary action can be taken.
