The Greek charity Heart Doctors (Giatroi tis Kardias) has brought joy to an isolated village in Nigeria by funding the reconstruction of their community clinic. Founded in 2001 by 21 members, Heart Doctors has been active in Greece and abroad, providing humanitarian missions, healthcare services, and supplies to those in need.
From Greek and European communities affected by natural disasters to impoverished areas worldwide, Heart Doctors has been dedicated to easing the burden. Their name, which translates to “Heart Doctors,” reflects their mission: “From love to our suffering fellow people, emanating from the heart.”
The charity’s humanitarian mission to Nigeria began when they visited a remote village in Niger State. They found a dilapidated infirmary that was on the verge of collapse. “Fearing the collapse, which may have resulted in injuries to patients, doctors, and nurses, we asked residents to demolish the building at that time, promising to fund the construction of a new infirmary,” the charity wrote on their Facebook page.
The reconstruction of the clinic is progressing rapidly, and Heart Doctors plans to inaugurate it during their next mission to the state in the coming months. This is not the charity’s first project in Africa; last November, they inaugurated a school and a clinic in Cameroon.
Heart Doctors’ members, including doctors of various specialties, have participated in humanitarian missions since 1998. They have faced numerous challenges, including safety risks, such as the kidnapping of Vice President Eleni Sotiriou in Iraq in 2006. Sotiriou was rescued after five days in captivity.
In less dangerous situations, the charity’s members have had to come up with creative solutions to healthcare emergencies. “Many times, reaching the final destination is a challenge! The team has to travel for many hours and use different means of transport—airplanes, cars, pirogues…” they said.
In one instance, the charity showed how they had to prepare an improvised splint using a piece of cardboard box, cotton, and bandage to stabilize a hurt limb until the patient could reach the nearest hospital, many kilometers away.
Heart Doctors’ efforts have been met with gratitude from the local communities, who benefit from the charity’s free healthcare services. All donations, whether in food or medicine, are taken directly to those who need them most.
