A group, the Centre for Human Rights Advocacy and Wholesome Society (CEHRAWS), has urged the National Assembly to promptly engage the Federal Government to evaluate the new tax law, saying that it may cause additional hardship for the people.
Earlier this week, President Bola Tinubu stated that there would be no going back on the new tax law.
However, the group’s Executive Director, Chuka Peter Okoye, cautioned in a statement on Thursday that if the severe portions of the law are not repealed, the nation could face widespread job losses and the collapse of small enterprises.
The group, which claims to promote good governance and economic fairness, criticized the Federal Government’s stance that the new tax legislation will benefit low-income earners and vulnerable individuals.
“Many Nigerians may grapple with rising living costs, job insecurity and social uncertainty because of the new tax law.
“It may place additional burdens on households and small businesses without sufficient safeguards for the most vulnerable.
“Taxation, while essential to governance, should be humane, constitutionally sound and designed to promote equity rather than widen inequality,” Okoye said.
According to the group, true reform necessitates listening to citizens, establishing accountability mechanisms, and ensuring that revenue strategies are in line with economic realities on the ground.
It also warned that badly implemented budgetary measures could erode public trust and undermine social cohesiveness.
Beyond revenue, the organization urged renewed focus on the rule of law, accountability policing, and livelihood protection at all levels of government.
