Guernsey Charity Receives Significant Funding to Enhance Children’s Services

A charity in Guernsey, Bright Beginnings, has received a significant boost in the form of a £60,000 government grant to support the future of children’s services on the island. This grant will ensure the charity’s “financial sustainability,” according to the States.

Bright Beginnings, based in St Sampson’s, provides a range of services, including a children’s centre for families, a nursery, preschool, and literacy programme for children up to age four. Deputy Marc Leadbeater, Vice-President of the Committee Health & Social Care (HSC), emphasized the importance of this grant, saying it would “support the charity in the crucial work that they do.”

This funding also marks the beginning of a new partnership between HSC and the third sector to develop future children’s services on the island. Bright Beginnings offers various forms of support to families, including free antenatal classes, support groups, and therapeutic work. Staff at the charity also receive referrals from other providers, such as health visitors, midwives, doctors, and social workers

Deputy Heidi Soulsby, political lead for Guernsey’s charity sector, praised Bright Beginnings, saying they were well-placed to help the States develop future children’s services. “We now have an opportunity to consider what we want services to look like going forward so that they can best support our children and families,” Soulsby said. “This is a discussion we need to have with organisations like Bright Beginnings, on a co-design basis, given their expertise and passion for the work they do.”

Soulsby also highlighted the potential for future collaboration, saying, “The next stage would then be to look and see whether there’s an opportunity to commission some of these services to meet the needs of our community in the most efficient and impactful way.”

Rachel Copeland, chair of Bright Beginnings’ board of directors, welcomed the funding, saying, “We’re looking forward to working in partnership with the States of Guernsey to explore the further development of services.”
