A Students’ Union Government election at Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State turned violent on Saturday, leaving several students injured. A viral video showed students scaling the school’s fence as gunshots rang out in the background, with smoke visible at the venue, suggesting the use of tear gas. Some youths were also seen brandishing knives to scare away students
The election was peaceful until it was disrupted by local boys backing a candidate known as Voice, who hails from Akpekpe in Auchi. The student alleged that Voice was trailing the popular candidate, Verify, and resorted to violence when he realized he wouldn’t win.
“The students stood behind and voted for Verify massively. Midway into the election, the agents of Voice found out that their candidate would not win. They raised an alarm, and the local boys stormed the area, snatched the ballot boxes and dispersed the students by shooting into the air and using tear gas,” the student said.
“This is a bad development for our school, and I hope it will not snowball into something more brutal.”
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command said he had no official report on the incident and was yet to hear from the Divisional Police Officer in the area. “I do not have the report for now,” he said.
Efforts to get a response from the school management were unsuccessful, as the institution is yet to appoint a new Public Relations Officer following the death of the previous official.
