EKSU emerges First Runner-Up at SEG Challenge Bowl

Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti (EKSU), has made a remarkable achievement by emerging as the first runner-up in the 2025 Sub-Saharan African Students’ Conference and Challenge Bowl of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). The competition, which took place from June 23rd to 25th, 2025, featured 15 participating institutions from Sub-Saharan Africa.

The EKSU team, comprising Boluwatife Osasona and Lawrence Blessing, both 300-level students of the Department of Geophysics, with assistance from Olayioye Idowu Iyanuoluwa, scaled through the first and second stages to secure a slot among the top five. The team will proceed to the Global final along with the top two institutions: University of Lagos and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana

“We are proud of our students’ outstanding performance, and we look forward to the global final,” said Prof. Adeyinka Aturamu and Mr. M. A Adeniran, who coordinated the students for the competition.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatola Ayodele, congratulated the staff and students of the department, as well as the university community, saying, “EKSU is known for excellence and honour, which would be maintained to further promote the university globally.”

The prizes for winning the Sub-Saharan region are: First position – $100, Second position – $60, and Third position – $40. EKSU’s achievement is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation
