Helmsley Trust supports cancer patients with $10 million grant

The State of Hawaii has announced two grants totalling $10 million from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to two Oʻahu hospitals.

Two grants of $5 million will expand access to critical cancer care at Kapi‘olani Medical Centre for Women & Children and at the Queen’s Medical Centre–West O‘ahu Cancer Centre. Funds to the Kapiʻolani Medical Centre will support construction of a cancer and infusion centre.

Queen’s West plans to use the funds to support a 2,500-square-foot expansion of its cancer centre that will add three infusion bays and six exam rooms and allow the hospital to accommodate 20 per cent more patients. The grants are part of the Helmsley Trust’s goal of reducing disparities between rural and urban Americans in their access to healthcare.

“O‘ahu residents facing cancer diagnoses should be able to access top-notch cancer care close to home, where family and friends can provide much-needed support,” said Helmsley Charitable trustee Walter Panzirer. “These expansions will ensure patients can get the care they need in a timely manner.”
