Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday called on President Bola Tinubu to implement the Green Imperative Project (GIP) originally initiated by the late Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture.
Ogbeh passed away on Saturday at the age of 78, according to a statement released by his family.
Okechukwu emphasized that one of the most meaningful ways Tinubu could honor Ogbeh’s legacy would be to ensure the swift execution of the GIP, describing it as a tribute to a committed and visionary patriot.
He made these remarks while addressing reporters at the late Ogbeh’s residence near the Aso Villa.
Reflecting on Ogbeh’s tenure as Agriculture Minister, Okechukwu highlighted his unwavering commitment to the Green Imperative Project, which aimed to transform agricultural practices in Nigeria through widespread mechanization.
He said: “Chief Audu Ogbe was so passionate with his pet project, the GIP, which he believed sincerely will utilise every square kilometer of Nigeria’s arable land for one crop and livestock or the other. Ogbe earnestly craved for mechanisation armada, which will make Nigeria not only food sufficient but with capacity for export.
“Hence with his team he visited Brazil in 2018, made sure he finalised the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and financial model agreements with the Brazilian government, and Islamic Development Bank and Co insuring the project.”
Okechukwu also urged Tinubu to consider Ogbeh’s words from his final in-depth interview, which he granted to a national newspaper before his passing.
In conclusion, Okechukwu offered prayers for Ogbeh’s eternal rest, asking God to receive his soul in His heavenly kingdom.
And again appealed to Mr President to as a matter of urgent national importance to execute Chief Ogbe’s pet project, the GIP as his living commemorative legacy, secondly to lift millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty,” he added.
