US President Donald Trump has ordered the recall of Richard Mills, the US ambassador to Nigeria.

A US official described the event as part of a larger reorganization of almost 30 ambassadorial and senior embassy postings around the world.

The move is part of a larger attempt to align US diplomatic representation abroad with President Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda.

State Department sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, acknowledged that the ambassadors affected by the shake-up were first nominated during the Biden administration but will now leave in January.

While the diplomats may return to Washington for additional assignments, their tenures as chiefs of mission will come to an end.

The recalls have primarily affected Africa, with ambassadors from 13 countries, including Nigeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Uganda, among those withdrawn. Other affected areas include Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and the Western Hemisphere.

The State Department described the moves as a “standard process in any administration,” emphasizing that ambassadors serve at the discretion of the president and are intended to advance the government’s policy interests.
