Bright Ngene of the Labour Party was proclaimed the victor of the rerun election in the Enugu South 1 State Constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday.

However, the announcement was made in spite of Ngene’s continued incarceration.

Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, signed the statement announcing the announcement.

After multiple unsuccessful attempts to hold the court-ordered rerun, it signaled the conclusion of an extended crisis.

Ngene defeated his nearest opponent, Sam Ngene of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by a margin of more than 3,000 votes. Ngene is currently serving a seven-year imprisonment sentence at Enugu prison due to a communal dispute involving a N15 million community development fund.

Olumekun confirmed the result, saying: “For the Enugu South 1 State Constituency of Enugu State, Ngene Bright Emeka of the Labour Party (LP) was declared the winner.”

He continued, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to due process, “INEC will continue to comply with all lawful orders and ensure that the will of the people as expressed through the ballot is respected.”

On August 16, 2025, polling officials failed to provide critical materials including result sheets, causing interruptions and other difficulties for the actual rerun.

Addressing this, INEC noted: “The Commission regrets the earlier logistical challenges and wishes to reassure the public that measures have been taken to forestall a recurrence.”

Additionally, INEC affirmed that this week will see the presentation of Certificates of Return.

“The presentation for National Assembly members will take place on Thursday, August 21, while elected State Assembly members will receive theirs on Friday, August 22, 2025,” Olumekun said.

Additionally, the Commission promised Nigerians that it would “continuously inform the public on all its activities in the interest of transparency and accountability.”
