A woman from Nairobi has shared her experience of enduring years of abuse and conflict with her parents, which ultimately led to a violent assault that caused her significant trauma.
She recounted a traumatic event in which her father undressed her and attacked her within her husband’s house, resulting in visible injuries on her back and thighs. She became convinced that her family would never allow her to live in peace , even in her marriage because of the shame and fear stemming from being assaulted by her own parent.
After that, the harassment persisted. The woman alleges that her parents subsequently forced entry into her home and took away almost all her belongings, including household items intended for friends.
They took her KCSE and diploma certificates, which was most distressing and prevented her from looking for work during the pandemic when jobs were hard to come by.
It has been reported that efforts to recover the documents were countered by her mother’s demands for KSh 250,000, which was an amount beyond the financial means of her and her husband as students. She thinks the aim of the tactic was to undermine her autonomy and disrupt her marriage.
Even though her husband attempted to repair the relationship with her family, the conflict persists. Her testimony has ignited demands for those experiencing similar familial abuse to seek legal recourse and safeguard themselves, instead of silently enduring ongoing suffering.
