Sexual harassment has become a pervasive issue in Nigerian universities, posing a significant threat to academic freedom, safety, and the overall well-being of students, particularly females. The menace has been perpetuated by some lecturers, staff, and even fellow students, leaving victims traumatized, stigmatized, and often reluctant to report incidents.
The consequences of sexual harassment are far-reaching, affecting not only the victims but also the entire academic community. It undermines the integrity of the educational system, creates a culture of fear and intimidation, and can have long-lasting effects on the mental and emotional health of those affected
There is a need for Nigerian universities to take concrete steps to address this issue, including developing and enforcing robust policies and procedures to prevent and respond to sexual harassment. This can include providing support services for victims, promoting awareness and education campaigns, and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
By tackling sexual harassment head-on, Nigerian universities can create a safer, more inclusive, and more supportive learning environment that allows all students to thrive and reach their full potential
