Over 100 US universities and colleges, including Ivy League institutions Princeton and Brown, have issued a joint letter condemning President Donald Trump’s “political interference” in the education system. The letter was issued a day after Harvard University sued the Trump administration over threats to cut funding and impose outside political supervision.
The joint letter read: “We speak with one voice against the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education.” The universities emphasised their openness to “constructive reform” and “legitimate government oversight” but opposed “undue government intrusion”.
The letter further stated: “We must reject the coercive use of public research funding.” This move comes as Trump has sought to exert control over prestigious universities, claiming they tolerate campus anti-Semitism. Several top institutions have already bowed to demands from the Trump administration, which claims the educational elite is too left-wing.
In Harvard’s case, the White House is seeking unprecedented levels of government control over the university’s inner workings. The joint letter by the universities signifies a united stance against Trump’s policies, which they believe threaten the integrity of American higher education.
