The SIL Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has made a significant contribution to Nigeria’s healthcare sector by donating dialysis machines to five hospitals across the country. This initiative aims to improve access to life-saving treatment for patients with kidney disease, particularly those who cannot afford it.
The foundation donated one dialysis machine to Gbagada General Hospital in Lagos, while four other machines were distributed to hospitals in Lagos, Rivers, and Abuja. According to Ubile Lawson, CEO of SIL Foundation, the organisation’s mission is to support the less privileged. “We are here because of the less privileged,” she emphasized. “We want this machine to be used to reach those poor people who may not be able to afford dialysis normally.”
To ensure the machines’ sustainability, the foundation also provided consumables and spare parts. Lawson noted that this donation is expected to minimise treatment costs, making dialysis more accessible to those in need. “We came with consumables, and we hope that the cost of treatment will be minimised,” she said
The donation was facilitated by Prof Ibi Erekosima, a UK-based nephrologist who partnered with the SIL Foundation. Erekosima highlighted the significance of addressing kidney disease in Africa, citing diabetes, hypertension, and infections as major contributing factors. He expressed confidence that the donated machines would provide sustainable care for patients, enabling them to access proper dialysis treatment.
Dr. Olusegun Babafemi, Medical Director of Gbagada General Hospital, thanked the SIL Foundation for the donation, stating that it would greatly impact the hospital’s ability to provide affordable dialysis treatment. “We have some NGOs trying to assist patients, but this will go a long way,” he said. “We can reach out to more patients, and those who couldn’t afford dialysis will now have access to it.”
The Medical Director also commended the Federal Government’s efforts to subsidize dialysis treatment and encouraged state governments to follow suit. This donation is poised to increase the hospital’s dialysis capacity, ultimately improving the lives of patients with kidney disease in Nigeria.
