Montana State University Receives Historic $30 Million Scholarship Endowment to Advance Wildlife Habitat Protection

Montana State University (MSU) has announced a transformative $30 million scholarship endowment from Kathy Crawford and her late husband, Thomas H. “Tim” Crawford, in support of efforts to advance wildlife habitat protection. This historic gift, the largest scholarship endowment in MSU history, will establish the Crawford Wildlife Habitat Scholarships, providing critical support to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing research and educational activities focused on conserving wildlife habitat.

The endowment is expected to generate $1.2 million annually in scholarship funds, ensuring a lasting impact on the university’s conservation efforts. Students from all MSU colleges and departments are eligible to apply, provided they are engaged in or interested in conducting research and educational or creative activities that focus on conserving wildlife habitat.

Kathy Hansen Crawford, a former professor in the earth sciences department at MSU, reflected on the motivation behind the gift, saying, “Tim and I shared a deep love for Montana. He cherished its natural heritage, the legacy of public wildlife, and he had a special place in his heart for rural people and stewardship that can take many forms.

Crawford continued, “He was always grateful for the sense of purpose outdoor experiences gave him in his life. For both of us, we saw hope for the future expressed in the desire of young people wanting to make a positive difference in protecting natural lands.” This endowment serves as a lasting tribute to Tim Crawford’s legacy and his passion for conservation
