The Lagos State Government has disclosed that the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran is beginning to affect some of its major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the 150-bed Massey Children’s Hospital on Lagos Island.
The government also responded to concerns surrounding the delayed commissioning of the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge, explaining that the bridge cannot yet be opened to motorists because work on connecting roads is still in progress.
The revelations were made on Monday during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing held to mark the seventh anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration at Alausa, Ikeja.
Speaking during the briefing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, said progress on the reconstruction of the Massey Children’s Hospital had been slowed by challenges linked to the importation of essential construction materials.
According to him, documents submitted by the contractor showed that the delays were connected to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
“The contractor, according to documents made available to us, has experienced delays in importing necessary construction materials due to the ongoing war between the United States and Iran,” Olayinka said.
The Massey Children’s Hospital project involves upgrading the existing Lagos Island facility into a modern seven-storey specialist paediatric hospital.
Upon completion, the hospital is expected to become Nigeria’s largest dedicated children’s hospital, providing services ranging from general healthcare to specialised paediatric treatment.
Despite the setbacks, Olayinka noted that substantial progress had already been achieved on the project, adding that the hospital construction has created about 750 jobs.
He also disclosed that another major healthcare project, the 280-bed General Hospital in Ojo, has generated around 600 employment opportunities.
Olayinka reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing ongoing health infrastructure projects despite global economic and geopolitical pressures.
“The Sanwo-Olu administration has demonstrated that the restoration of public health facilities remains a priority,” he said.
He added that the government remains focused on delivering a modern healthcare facility capable of meeting the increasing demand for specialised paediatric services across Lagos State.
Also speaking at the briefing, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Mr. Olufemi Daramola, explained that the Opebi-Mende Link Bridge has not yet been fully opened because construction is still ongoing on key connecting roads, including Salvation Road, Adeola Street and Toyin Street, as well as a nearby monument project.
He assured residents that the bridge would be opened to traffic once all supporting infrastructure tied to the project is completed.
Daramola further disclosed that since 2019, the Lagos State Government has completed 362 roads covering approximately 347 kilometres, alongside investments in sectors such as healthcare, education, justice delivery, public safety and digital infrastructure.
He added that 130 roads spanning about 113 kilometres were delivered within the last year alone.
According to him, several major road projects, including the Eti-Osa–Lekki–Epe Expressway corridor, Gberigbe Road in Ikorodu, Aka-Kemberi Road in Ojo, Ijegun-Ijagemo Road and Akesan-Igando Road, are now at advanced stages awaiting commissioning.
He also stated that work is nearing completion on other strategic routes, including the Igbogbo–Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Igbe Road, Agric-Isawo-Konu-Arepo Road and the Lagos-Badagry carriageway.
