Renowned Nigerian singer, Niniola, has opened up about the deep emotional scars left by witnessing the assassination of her father, Simeon Apata, a retired Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army.

General Apata was killed by armed men on January 8, 1995, in Lagos, right in front of his family members.

In a recent interview with Jay On Air, Niniola reflected on the painful memory, describing it as an experience she will never be able to forget particularly because she shared a special bond with her father.

“I was in the house when my dad was murdered. And I was his favourite child so you can imagine [the trauma]. Till today, I’m not over it. I can never get over it,” she said.

“I was very young when it happened. I don’t remember my exact age then but it wasn’t a good memory.”

In 2023, her sister and fellow artist, Teni, also spoke publicly about the emotional impact of witnessing their father’s murder, revealing that the trauma began when she was just two years old.
