Former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has stated that he will only consider defecting to another political party if offered the presidential or vice-presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso expressed this on Saturday when addressing NNPP supporters at his Kano home, emphasizing that any defection must reflect both his political standing and the interests of his national support base.

The former Kano state governor stated that his supporters, developed over four political decades, would not accept a move that did not guarantee him one of the top two places in the 2027 elections.

“Despite my political journey spanning over four decades, our people across the country will only accept a defection if it guarantees the presidency or vice-presidency,” he said.

Kwankwaso stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had invited him to join the party, but he declined owing to a lack of a concrete and beneficial offer.

“We told them that we could agree to go with you, but what will you give me? Appointments? How many? Which one will fit me, and which will also fit the national chairman and his executives, who are people with values? They didn’t answer any of it,” he said.

Kwankwaso reaffirmed his political goal, saying the NNPP is still devoted to its Kwankwasiyya ideology, which focuses on elevating the underprivileged and empowering youths via education, employment, economic prosperity, improved healthcare, and agricultural growth.

He emphasized that the party is preparing for a strong showing in the 2027 general elections, defining the campaign as a national enterprise that demands unity, particularly in Kano State.

“Kano State must be united so that we can win again in the next elections,” he told reporters.

Kwankwaso also decried the suspected planned defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, calling it a betrayal, but advised his supporters to be calm and prayerful amidst the developing political upheavals.

“This is a lesson to all of us. We thought everyone had understood. We never expected betrayal. The most painful thing is that after everything we did to rescue Kano from Ganduje and the APC, you have now handed the governorship back to him free of charge,” Kwankwaso said.
