Charles Inojie reveals why most graduates are not employable

Popular Nollywood actor Charles Inojie has raised concerns about the employability of Nigerian graduates, arguing that many leave university without sufficient knowledge or practical understanding of their areas of study.

The actor expressed his concern while recounting an encounter he had with a university graduate on a movie set.

According to Inojie, the graduate, who studied Linguistics, struggled to participate in a conversation about the discipline despite having studied the course at university.

He said the experience left him disappointed and reinforced his concerns about the level of knowledge possessed by some graduates.

“I was having a discussion with someone on set; she now said she studied Linguistics. She was so surprised and couldn’t believe it when I said, ‘Oh, all these Noam Chomsky children.’ She was lost when we started discussing her course of study (Linguistics), meanwhile, it was an elective course for me. She was lost,” he said.

Inojie said the incident reflected a broader problem within the country’s education system, particularly concerning graduates who possess academic qualifications but lack sufficient knowledge of their fields.

“I was really disappointed in her and that thing dey worry me. I’ve heard people say that a good number of our graduates today are not employable. That statement no too far from the truth o. That is why many of them are not willing to work,” Inojie added.

The actor maintained that some young Nigerians are unwilling to accept available employment opportunities because they lack adequate knowledge and competence in the disciplines they studied.

He stressed that possessing a university certificate should ideally be accompanied by a solid understanding of the field and the ability to apply acquired knowledge in practical situations.
