A Kenyan woman who was interviewed by Karanja a few hours ago talked candidly about her battle with drug addiction and how she overcame it. She claims that her name is Faiza Wanjiru and that she works as a counselor at the moment. She clarified that her primary responsibility is to assist drug users and demonstrate to them that, like her own experience, change is achievable.
Faiza disclosed that she had previously been a thief, a prostitute, and an addict who consumed hard narcotics like cocaine, bhang, and alcohol.
After her parents divorced, she started abusing drugs as a result of peer pressure and rejection from her family. She moved in with her brother and was scheduled to start Alliance High School after finishing Class Eight. Sadly, her father passed away, and her brother informed her that he was unable to cover her tuition. He sent her to their businesswoman mother, who likewise stated that she was unable to pay for her education.
She was coerced into marriage against her will and had no support. Later, she fled her home and relocated to Nairobi, where she met the brother of one of her friends. He exposed her to bhang, khat, and booze. She became pregnant by the man at this time, but he later pushed her away.
She thought about having the child when she was homeless, but her friends talked her out of it. They told her about a woman who wanted to purchase a child. Faiza agreed to sell her newborn child for Ksh 20,000 out of desperation. Three factors led her to accept the offer: she had no time to raise a child, she had nowhere to take the infant after delivery, and she needed money for drugs. The woman started caring for her after giving her Ksh 10,000 in advance.
Faiza gave the baby over after giving delivery, but they were both taken into custody. The officers were able to save the infant. She started shoplifting after being freed and was eventually apprehended. She was beaten unconscious by a mob. She was taken to the Nairobi City Mortuary by the police, who believed she was dead. She regained consciousness, nevertheless, and fled nude.
Her life got much more difficult until she was saved by three men. She spent two years in Zambia after they brought her there. Eventually, she went back to Kenya, but the cycle of drug misuse and adversity persisted. She then met a white man who made it possible for her to visit the United States. She was sent back to Kenya as her addiction deteriorated there.
When she returned, she found that her mother had been given the child she had previously sold. Because of how hard life was in Murang’a, she ended up back in the thick of prostitution.
Faiza underlined that prostitution and drug addiction are illnesses that need psychological care. She decided to change her life after being freed from prison. She went back to school in 2016. She was in Form One at the time, while her son was in Form Three.
Later, she enrolled in college to study counseling and guiding. Together, she and a sergeant started providing counseling services to drug addicts and kids. They eventually opened a rehabilitation facility, which has now expanded greatly.
