The Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T) in Ibadan has taken a significant step towards enhancing food sufficiency in Nigeria. Through its Agric Centre For Training and Entrepreneurship Development (ACTED), the institute recently empowered farmers, youths, and retirees with practical skills in livestock and crop production.
The comprehensive training program covered crucial areas such as livestock management, including sheep, goats, poultry, pigs, rabbits, snails, and grasscutters, as well as crop production, focusing on cassava, yam, vegetables, and organic fertilizer production. According to Professor Gabriel Oluwatosin, Director and Chief Executive Officer of IAR&T, “The training would complement Federal Government’s efforts and focus on agriculture as a veritable means of diversifying Nigeria’s economy.” He urged participants to utilize the acquired knowledge and skills effectively
Professor Adeboye Omole, the training coordinator, expressed gratitude to IAR&T’s management for organizing the program, stating, “The training programme is meant to boost agriculture and alleviate poverty among the Nigerian populace.” He also encouraged participants to share their newfound skills with others.
The participants appreciated IAR&T for providing them with this valuable opportunity and pledged to apply the knowledge gained from the training. They believe that the sustainability of such programs can significantly contribute to food security, generate employment, and promote sustainable livelihoods. “Let us make judicious use of the knowledge and skills acquired during the training,” Professor Oluwatosin advised.
By providing such training programs, IAR&T aims to contribute to Nigeria’s agricultural development and food security. The institute’s efforts are geared towards empowering individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability.
