Some women have pledged to sue the Lagos state administration, which is led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, under the auspices of the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA), a pressure group.

The pressure group promised to take the Lagos state government to court over its law requiring state-owned schools to only teach Yoruba.

IWA is associated with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The warning was made on Thursday, February 13, during a news briefing in Umuahia, the capital of Abia state, by Mrs. Nneka Chimezie, the national president of IWA.

In a cosmopolitan state like Lagos, Chimezie stated that the group was concerned about such legislation, according to Vanguard.

Since the government knew that the state was home to numerous different tribes, she said, such a statute was improper.

She stated, “They should make it open—Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba—should be taught.”

She added that the group was planning an Igbo language celebration event for February 21 in honor of Mother Tongue Day, which is observed by the UN.

However, the Yoruba were praised by the IWA president for maintaining their language.

Igbo boys and daughters were urged by Chimezie to join IWA in the fight to prevent the loss of the Igbo language.
