The Imo State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged for a swift probe into the slaying of Chinedu Nwowu, its chief legal counsel in Oru West Local Government Area ¹[2).

According to reports, Nwowu was brutally killed by unknown assailants in Mgbidi on Wednesday, January 22.

In a strongly worded press statement, the party’s publicity secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, vehemently denounced the heinous murder of the attorney, emphasizing that the assassination clearly indicated a perilous environment where human life had lost its significance.

The PDP spokesperson revealed that Nwowu, prior to his demise, served as the party’s chief legal advisor in Oru West Local Government Area and a devoted leader whose substantial contributions and dedication to the party’s advancement were deeply appreciated.

He disclosed that Nwowu was a dynamic and charismatic lawyer, mobilizer, leader, and achiever who earned admiration and respect from all quarters.

“The party uses this medium to commiserate with the entire Nwowu family over the tragic and irreparable loss, and pray the almighty God to grant the deceased’s soul eternal rest as well as give everyone affected by the great loss, including members of our party, the fortitude to bear it. we will surely miss him.

“Importantly, we call on the security agencies to ensure justice for the slain legal luminary by doing everything to fish out the perpetrators and bring them under the full weight of the law.

“PDP notes that Barr. Nwowu’s death, regrettably, calls to mind the insecurity ravaging the State, a situation where hoodlums, assassins, terrorists and kidnappers have continued to prowl confidently.

“Sadly, in the same month Barr. Nwowu was attacked and killed, unknown gunmen in one day killed no fewer than 27 people in coordinated attacks in Amaebu, Awo-Idemili, Eziawa, Umuhu-Okabia communities in Orsu Local Government Area of the State. This includes the butchering of 9 men in a shop, leaving them in the pool of their blood,” the party said.

The PDP spokesperson pointed out that the most distressing aspect was the frequency of similar incidents in the State since 2020.

The party urged the State Government, led by Hope Uzodinma, to emerge from its seeming state of inertia and tackle the multifaceted challenges plaguing the State.

“The Government cannot continue to sit comfortably on its unprecedented failure to protect the lives and property of Imo citizens despite the huge security votes and other resources at its disposal,” the release further stated.
