Mudashiru Obasa, the embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, asserts that it is not sinful to harbour aspirations of becoming the governor of Lagos in 2027.
Obasa challenged any state politician to inform Lagosians of the time and location at which he announced his intention to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a press conference held on Saturday at his home in the GRA neighbourhood of Ikeja, the metropolis of Lagos.
Obasa said, “Having (an) ambition to become a governor is not a sin. Is it However, I said it on the floor of the house when the budget was presented that I had no thoughts of governorship but that does not mean I am not qualified or that I lack experience and I still maintain that.”
“I’m still the speaker until the right thing has been done,” he said, criticising the assembly complex’s militarisation throughout the impeachment procedure. Additionally, he asserted that his dismissal as speaker occurred while he was away from Nigeria.
On Monday, January 13, 2025, Obasa was removed as speaker of Lagos after being voted out by nearly two-thirds of the 40-member legislative chamber for alleged misconduct and other infractions.
Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, Obasa’s deputy, was elected as the new Speaker right away, making history as the first woman to lead the South-West state’s legislature.
Obasa, a native of Agege Constituency I, was elected to the House for the first time in 2007. Since then, he has been in the chamber. Prior to his dismissal in January 2025, he was elected speaker in June 2015.
