The Corpers’ Journey Advocacy Network (CJAN) has urged both the Federal Government and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to make the provision of safe and adequate housing for corps members a top priority nationwide.
In a statement issued on Friday, CJAN’s Managing Director, Taiwo Ajayi, emphasized that the welfare of corps members should remain a primary concern within the NYSC program.
Ajayi highlighted that one of the major difficulties faced by many corps members, particularly in rural or underserved areas, is the lack of proper accommodation.
He pointed out that reports from various states indicate that numerous corps members often have to find their own lodging, with many ending up in overcrowded spaces, dilapidated structures, or locations that lack basic safety.
“Corps members are national assets who dedicate a year of their lives to serve Nigeria.”
He stressed that it is the joint duty of the NYSC and the federal authorities to ensure corps members have access to decent housing, clean water, electricity, and other essential services.
Ajayi further stated that failing to provide corps members with suitable living conditions equates to disregarding their wellbeing and undermines the fundamental goals of the service program.
He appealed to the government to implement a national policy that guarantees uniform and quality housing for corps members in every state.
As part of his recommendation, Ajayi proposed that the NYSC engage in partnerships with local communities, government councils, and private sector entities to construct or upgrade corps lodges in key areas.
“The issue of housing should not be left to chance. There must be collaboration between the NYSC, local authorities, and the private sector to provide secure and habitable lodges for every corps member,” he added.
Ajayi also called on the NYSC to improve its supervision to ensure that institutions such as schools and healthcare centers that receive corps members honor their accommodation commitments.
Although he acknowledged the current economic challenges facing the country, Ajayi reiterated that making corps members’ wellbeing a priority is vital for fostering national progress and empowering Nigerian youth.
“Providing suitable housing is not a privilege; it is a right. When corps members feel safe and respected, they are more motivated to serve their host communities effectively,” he added.
