On Thursday, India pledged to intensify its crackdown on migrants following a U.S. military flight that returned 104 migrants, a move tied to President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement efforts.

Reports indicate that since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, a significant number of undocumented migrants have been arrested across the United States.

Trump’s executive actions, which aim to overhaul U.S. immigration policies, are expected to affect 11 million undocumented individuals.

“It is the obligation of all countries to take back their nationals if they are found to be living illegally abroad,” stated India’s Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

According to Michael W. Banks, the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol, the repatriation of migrants to India via military transport represents the longest deportation flight to date.

On Wednesday, Banks posted a video on social media showing a line of shackled migrants boarding the military aircraft.

Jaishankar assured that the Indian government was working with the U.S. to ensure the deportees’ safety and dignity during the journey.

He emphasized, however, that deportations were not a new practice, noting that the U.S. had expelled over 15,000 Indians since 2009, with nearly half of them being deported between 2019 and 2024.

“Our focus should be on crackdown — strong crackdown — on the illegal migration industry, while taking steps to ease visas for the legitimate traveller,” Jaishankar said.

India, currently the world’s fifth-largest economy, continues to see a steady stream of its citizens seeking better opportunities abroad, despite its rapidly growing GDP.
