The Labour Party (LP) National Convention in Anambra on Wednesday has been disowned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This was said by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the INEC Chairman’s chief press secretary, during a Thursday interview in Abuja with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The convention’s conduct was not monitored by INEC, according to Oyekanmi, who did not elaborate on why.
On Tuesday, however, the LP moved the convention from Umuahia in Abia to Nnewi in Anambra State, according to NAN reports.
The LP National Legal Advisor, Mr. Kehinde Edun, addressed reporters over the venue change and said that the party had properly notified INEC of the new location and date.
“No, it is holding in Anambra. Nnewi, to be precise, is not Umuahia in Abia State again. In fact, Umuahia was not even the first venue we chose. Benin was the first choice before we changed to Umuahia and now Nnewi.
“So, we are at liberty to pick any venue of our choice. We only need to inform INEC about the change in venue and time,” Edun said.
Political parties must provide INEC with at least 21 days’ notice of any convention, congress, conference, or meeting, according to Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act of 2022.
This includes the convention or meeting that has been convened with the intention of “merging” and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies, or candidates for office.
