The senator representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, Ibrahim Lamido has announced his intention to depart from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the deteriorating security crisis impacting his constituency as the reason for his decision.
This revelation by Lamido came during a Friday conversation with journalists in Sokoto. He voiced serious worry about the ongoing banditry assaults that have afflicted many communities within the district.
The lawmaker stated that the ongoing violence and insecurity in Sokoto East had complicated his ability to stay in the party, as the realities faced by residents no longer matched the expectations and assurances they had received.
He characterized the security situation in the area as alarming, detailing that armed groups had attacked numerous villages, compelling residents to leave their homes and find safety elsewhere.
Lamido stated that the continuing assaults have greatly interrupted economic activities, especially agriculture, which is the primary source of sustenance for numerous families in the area.
“My people are enduring untold hardship. Bandits have destroyed entire communities, and I cannot remain in a system that has failed to demonstrate sufficient commitment to resolving this crisis,” Lamido stated.
According to the Sokoto senator, “the decision followed extensive consultations with traditional leaders, political stakeholders, and supporters across the senatorial district.”
He clarified that the discussions had clarified that many people believed a change in political direction was necessary under the current circumstances.
Lamido further disclosed that he had called attention to the worsening security situation at the federal level on multiple occasions, but he expressed disappointment that his concerns did not elicit an adequate response.
He asserted that the necessity of standing resolutely with his constituents, rather than any personal political ambition, guided his decision.
The senator additionally called on the federal government to bolster its initiatives aimed at addressing banditry in the North-West, cautioning that ongoing assaults could exacerbate the humanitarian difficulties that communities in those areas are already facing.
In recent months, Sokoto East—comprising local government areas like Sabon Birni, Isa, and Rabah—has experienced a series of attacks associated with banditry, leading to fatalities, abductions, and widespread property damage.
