A United States-based policy firm, Von Batten-Montague York L.C. has revealed intentions to involve members of the U.S. Congress and Donald Trump’s administration regarding Nigeria’s electoral body’s recent decision to revoke recognition of African Democratic Congress, ADC leadership.

This development comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) took action earlier this week to suspend official interactions with the party and withdraw recognition of its leadership until ongoing legal proceedings are resolved.

The decision has raised worries about how it might affect preparations for the upcoming presidential election.

The company issued a statement on Friday in which it cautioned that the action taken by INEC could have a considerable impact on political participation, characterizing the move as one that effectively puts a major opposition party in limbo at a crucial moment.

“The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission has withdrawn recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress and suspended all official engagement with the party pending ongoing litigation.

“This action has effectively frozen Nigeria’s main opposition political party at a critical moment as it prepares to compete in the upcoming Nigerian presidential election.

“The situation could hinder the opposition’s ability to organise and participate fully in the democratic process,” the statement read.

The firm voiced worries that such developments might erode trust in the electoral system, emphasizing that transparency and institutional independence are crucial for credible elections.

“At a time when Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections, any development that disrupts political participation, creates institutional uncertainty, or undermines the perceived independence of electoral bodies must be addressed with urgency and transparency,” it added.

The firm emphasized Nigeria’s strategic importance, pointing out that it continues to be Africa’s largest democracy and a vital ally of the United States in fields like regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. It contended that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process has broader international significance.

The organization stated that it would officially convey its worries to U.S. lawmakers and the Trump administration in order to guarantee that matters related to Nigeria’s democratic processes are acknowledged worldwide.

It further urged President Bola Tinubu to guarantee that the upcoming elections are held transparently, credibly, and in accordance with the electorate’s wishes.
