The African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of deepening poverty among Nigerians.

Atiku made the allegation in a statement signed by his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, where he questioned the Federal Government’s justification for the removal of fuel subsidy.

The former vice president argued that the decision to increase allocations to state governments as part of efforts to cushion the impact of subsidy removal raises deeper concerns about the condition of public education across the country.

According to Atiku, the situation also exposes what he described as a major weakness in the administration’s student loan policy.

He said, “This government took away subsidies, made transportation, food, and almost every other basic need more expensive, and let the cost of going to university go up so much that many families can’t afford it anymore.

“After making education more costly, the same government set up NELFUND and now proudly gives young Nigerians loans to cover school fees that many of their parents can no longer easily pay.

“What kind of reform first empties a family’s pocket and then offers the child a loan to survive the hardship government helped create?

“That is not progress. It is a vicious circle of government-manufactured poverty.”
