The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that spending on the oil sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has surpassed allocations for defence and national security.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Atiku, through his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, raised questions over the expenditure of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
Atiku specifically questioned why the N11.2 trillion reportedly spent by the NNPCL on security was more than three times the country’s defence allocation for 2025, which stood at N3.1 trillion.
He called for a comprehensive breakdown of the N11.2 trillion expenditure recorded by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in its 2025 financial records.
According to Atiku, the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should immediately provide Nigerians with details of how the N11.2 trillion allocated to pipeline surveillance and security was spent.
“Its 2025 accounts now show approximately N11.2 trillion in other receivables from the Federation. Nigerians cannot tell from these totals what was spent on pipeline surveillance. What was paid? Who was paid? For what work? Where are the results?” Atiku asked.
“These figures belong to different accounting categories, but their contrast is stark: under Tinubu, sums tied to the oil sector dwarf the resources allocated to defend the country. That is a damning measure of this administration’s priorities,” he added.
