Professor Udenta O. Udenta, the founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), has called for an 18-month Government of National Unity following the 2027 general elections to prevent a possible post-election crisis.

Udenta presented the proposal on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.

He argued that elections alone are insufficient to establish public trust or ensure stability, raising concerns about what would happen in Nigeria after the announcement of election results.

“Elections cannot, by themselves, build trust or guarantee stability,” he said.

The professor proposed establishing a Sovereign Commission for Democratic Sustainability and National Stability, bringing together the incumbent president, president-elect, all certified presidential candidates, national chairmen of political parties, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and civil society groups.

He disclosed that the initiative has the backing of supporters of President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Governor Seyi Makinde. He stressed that safeguarding Nigeria’s future should take precedence over the political interests of individual politicians.

Udenta said the commission should secure commitments from presidential candidates before the elections, requiring them to participate in the process regardless of whether they emerge victorious or lose.

He explained that the proposal was not intended to create another committee of former public officeholders whose communiqués would eventually be forgotten, but rather to establish a functional platform for dialogue.
