Interpol, the international police agency, announced Thursday that during the previous three months, operations aimed at combating drug trafficking and terrorism financing have resulted in the arrest of at least 45 individuals in West Africa.

Among those detained, according to Interpol, which has its headquarters in France, were a suspected member of the Islamic State near the borders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, as well as a North African who may have intended to cross Europe in order to join ISIS in Syria.

It further stated that 10 tonnes of amphetamines and more than $50 million worth of cocaine were seized in Burkina Faso and Cabo Verde, respectively.

“This operation marks a critical step in disrupting transnational organised crime networks that threaten regional stability and undermine efforts to build peace and foster development across West Africa,” Interpol said.
